Name your account
A health savings account is called an HSA. A flexible spending arrangement is called an FSA. If either is part of your benefits, ask the person or company that runs it about the proposed expense.
Name the expense
Ask about the exact item: the visit, a test or a product. Send the administrator its description and the reason it was recommended.
Ask what proof is needed
Ask whether a receipt and a health professional’s note are needed. Request the answer before counting on getting the money back.
Keep the records
Keep the description, date, amount and administrator’s answer together. Ask how to submit them and whether a deadline applies.
The general rule turns on the medical purpose
IRS is short for Internal Revenue Service. The IRS is the agency responsible for federal taxes.
As of September 2026, IRS guidance separates care for a diagnosed disease from expenses that only benefit general health.
This payment rule does not promise that your account can pay for a GHK-Cu expense. Ask the person who runs the account about your exact bill.
A note on the sources
Look for the account type you have and the section on medical expenses.
